whilst making Capuchons/Mardi Gras Hats/Masks

at Cite' des Arts
Grassroots Community Arts & Education Incubator

Link to their webpage...
http://www.citedesarts.org/Cite_des_Arts/Cite_des_Arts.html

(note: I have joined them & I volunteer...a lot...but the funnest is this time of year with the Mardi Gras Costumes to play in - until Lundi Gras..then I'll have to wait 'til Steampunk Fest Costume Sale to play in them again?!)

Oh the possibilites of who to be/what to wear at the Mardi Gras or the Courir de Mardi Gras...

Mirror Mirror on the Coat...

Evel Knievel Circus Version...

Seriously Sparkely Sinatra...
or Bling Master (as in School Master gone to the Bling side)
or Harry Potter goes Vegas

Circus ready...just add pants...
there's a red satin pair with gold brick-a-brac somewheres...

Sailor...Sailor Moon...

Bathing Beauty...Miss Bayou ??
(we can't read the stuck on gold lettering on the sash, but we think it's the name of a--what else? Bayou!-somewheres in Louisiana...also for some reason both these photos looks like they've been taken underwater, humidity...possibly...it is Louisiana afterall..)

For my British friends this would be a 'Swimming Costume'...what else--a costume?!

Hobbit...Red Riding Hood having a Blue/Green Day...
or Druids...did Goldilocks or do Werewolves/Vampires wear capes? hmm...
(the red capes were all sold or held back in Wardrobe...one of these capes or maybe too, in golden brown will be showing up on TV somewheres - at least one on Treme, filmed in NOLA, in the background of their Mardi Gras Show...)

Krewe de Polka Dots...
(one girl added a striped/sailor shirt underneath, so you could go cross eye'd looking at just her top half...so many combinations, they are near endless in this room full of vintage mardi gras country crew costumes from the 70's some of them--if only we could find photos of the originals...sigh...)

~~~
Mardi Gras Hats
(see Capuchons in post before this one--something to do with Capuchons Chasing Chickens...)
Part of the Mardi Gras Hat/Mask selection...
(spoiler: pink straw rice paddy hat--sold & so's the gold metallic hat with beads/mask)
first you take a rice paddy/asian type styrofoam hat...
then you glue old material from cut up vintage tunic on top...
Voila--a Mardi Gras hat, all you need is a metallic mask
with the same material glued to it too...
Oh what you can do with fabric & a glue gun...
(note: last year, Mardi Gras, there was an all girl's krewe
came it to raid all the pink everything--was not much left this year...)
More Mardi Gras Hat/Mask Selections...
Neon is the color this year, or metallic from the past...
Fringe, fabric or tassle-like always a must...
or fuzzy balls (but saved the bells to pin on the Capuchons -
just see the black/white diamond one behind, with what else for it's chicken looking feathers but cut up cotton black gloves--LoL...not sure which is more fun, making them or wearing them?!)
a special, this year only, addition to the Mardi Gras Hats/Masks...
a Mardi Gras Boot Beverage Coozie - Mai ya cher...
(note: that's a Louisiana Brewery Beer in that Coozie too by the way, just so ya' know...)
the really Really craft Mardi Gras Hat...
begun by a boy finished by an adult with a glue gun in hand...
supplies: cut down oatmeal can, paper cone, old fabric, fuzzy balls, shiny star garland, foam shapes, feathers... later there will be cupcake picks of Mardi Gras Masks added to the plastic lid (you just punch a hole in the plastic with the end of the pick & you're good to go...LoL...Lots of Fun...again to make/to wear...if you dare...)
the crafty hat in action...
with a crafty mask, that a kid's class made...
supplies: window screen, black duct tape, feathers, bottle caps, shiny pipe cleaners...
twine for a tie, but you could use elastic...
(note: for those who know, it's Christy behind/underneath all that...she's ready for a Courir de Mardi Gras...they do also do a kid's run, if only I were shorter--maybe I could go to theirs rather than the rough women's krewe's...)
Traditional Mask Making...
the 'crafty' table...
again the magic glue gun...
or (black) duct tape...
elastic up next to replace fingers...
but how Fabulous is that face?!
(of course there will be a Capuchon on top too)
Thanks Jack for sharing!
Re Capuchon:
Mr 'Just Staple It'
his fav tool to craft with
who needs a glue gun or duct tape
Re Mask:
I'll take that one the kid's made
let's just add some elastic
(I think it had something to do with the beer cap eyes/nose)
Re Capuchon:
Yes I like red/white also
(note to self--next year, more red/white fabric)
but I'll use the glue gun
Re Mask:
Let's try it long ways across
& paint & a fake beard
(note: purple elastic to be adjusted, after the paint drys...
as underneath that he's already got a red/black nose
from previous try on's while making it...
Oh the things you learn during the process of trying to craft stuff?!)
FAB u Lous Mask making by Lisa
feather beard/eyebrows
brown puff ball nose
paint lips/eyes - when I would not of thought of red
(was trying to use white out for white eye balls)
My attempt a mesh wire mask making
looking a bit like Dali with the eyeballs & mustache
but saved by big white beard & eyebrows right
(note: made to go with the blue fringe/world fabric Capuchon...
see earlier post on Capuchons Chasing Chickens for those pics)
Lagniappe...
Mardi Gras Cookies...
or King Cake...
(am gonna give up Sugar for Lent Y'all...ugh...)
Art Car Capuchons...
Racoon (or is he a fox) says: "Whatever boils your crawfish"
Turtle (is she a She) replies: "Oh Sharee"
(note: this Art Car is just too darn cute, all over...too bad I wasn't around for the time of the WhirlyBird--but one day 'Sharee' it will return?!)
